OUR PLACE EXIBITION

FORM & CONCEPT GALLERY

SANTA FE, NM USA
APRIL-JULY 2023

In Our Place: to the Moon and Back on a Rocketship from Rome, Ravenna’s work broadens its use of medium and reaches further back in time, referencing ancient Roman dishware and floor motifs. Using a domestic lens, not only in visual themes, but also in her making process, Ravenna leverages traditionally feminine handcrafts like sewing and embroidery to develop her work. She cooks up an egg pillow on a Roman plate alongside plush pasta throws inspired by Italian nonnas and moms, traditionally the family cooks.

This exhibition brings together Ravenna's lived experiences filtered through a lens of irreverent sentimentalism, often combined with a tinge of playful humor. Her work bridges the line between fine art and design, taking shape in a multimedia output that comes ultimately together in this space. Throughout her process, Ravenna often makes visual booklets and graphics as she develops her research, ideas, and narratives. This process is as important and valuable to the artist as the outcome, as is the use of upcycled materials or references to bring these works to fruition. Her approach centers around the goal of  balancing each piece like a cocktail. A recipe of equal parts concept, substance, and aesthetic.

Ancient depictions of female figures, flora, and food in her painting and illustration work continue that theme, while a bed fit for food service and wallpaper inspired by found linoleum used in her father’s work, bring together more of the home exploration. That family bent is further evident in a fresh beaded berry with leaves made from her grandmother’s upholstery fabric. That same grandma’s use of wallpaper in the family home and love of Italy helped set Ravenna on her artistic path, despite having passed before Ravenna’s birth

The show is ultimately a union of Ravenna’s past explorations and themes brought forth into a familial
co-examination of love, space and art. As she carried this show home after her father’s passing, Ravenna used this space to create and find comfort. She hopes it inspires you to do the same.
